Thursday 26th September – Hydro site visits in Wales

2 hydropower site visits in Wales – 26th of September

With the support of Gareth Harrison and colleagues from the BHA has arranged a special day of 2 hydropower site visits.

The day will encompass a visit to 2 sites; the first is Ynni Ogwen which is designed to provide a sustainable income for the benefit of the local community, powered by energy captured from the flow of the Ogwen river. The natural Environment in the Ogwen Valley offers itself as the perfect area for hydropower projects, since the climate and topography allow for such technologies to be effective. The vision is to harness and own the energy generating potential of the valley for the benefit of local communities. This benefit will be environmental, economic, social and cultural as the income of the project will be re-invested locally.

The second hydro is at Ynni Anafon which lies in the Anafon valley in the Carneddau massif which rises immediately south of the village of Abergwyngregyn just inside the northern boundary of the Snowdonia National Park and 4 km west-south-west of Llanfairfechan.

The Afon Anafon originates in Llyn Anafon, and the river descends rapidly for 3.3 km through open moorland and then through Coedydd Aber Forest to join the Afon Rhaeadr Fawr immediately upstream of Bontnewydd. The two tributaries form the Afon Aber which runs a further 2.3 km through the village and farmland to enter the eastern end of the Menai Strait at Traeth Lafan. The total descent of the river from Llyn Anafon is 558 m over 5.6 km.
