Micro & Small Hydro
With current Government focus on microgeneration and renewed interest in redeveloping many disused watermeel sites and small off-grid hydro projects, small hydro development in the UK is increasing in popularity (including pico, micro and mini). Individuals, small groups and communities are playing their part in combating Climate Change.
Small scale hydro is highly efficient (over 80%) and where suitable sites are available, it remains one of the cheapest forms of renewable electricity per unit. There are many opportunities for sensitively sited micro-hydro installations that can supply reliable generation with minimal visual impact on their surrounding environment.
Small hydro has a key role to play in the development of the world’s renewable energy resources, and more recent technological advancements have provided more opportunities, for example, the siphon propeller and Archimedean Screw turbines. Clean and reliable, there is still plenty of potential - it is a valuable resource just waiting to be tapped.
