I am very pleased to confirm that after sustained lobbying by the BHA, Welsh Government have recently confirmed the continuation of the business rate support grant scheme in 2019-20 which will cap the increase in business rates for non-community owned hydropower projects (to 10% or £1,000 where there was no previous liability).
The scheme is application based and hydro operators can apply for a grant towards their 2019-20 rates liability. Applications will be accepted from early April and further details on the process will be on the Welsh Government website in due course. The 100% business rate relief scheme will also continue for community hydro projects.
BHA member, Richard Rees, MD of North Wales Hydro commenting on the news said “The hydro industry in Wales are relieved that Welsh Government have continued their essential financial support on the very serious issue of Business Rates for hydroelectric schemes in Wales. A significant amount of work has been completed over the last 12 months by the BHA, Welsh Government and business rates specialists in an effort to find a workable long-term solution to this problem. I sincerely hope that come this time next year, the industry will be able to benefit from a long term solution which provides certainty going forwards, and a platform for further growth in the sector across Wales.”
