In tests during flooding, we have observed the high efficiency of screw turbines whereby overfilling the screw by 10% can more than overcome the loss of power from head loss.
This feature does not seem to be discussed by the screw manufacturers, though we are working to put some numbers around the effect.
We realise that this could help to increase potential from particularly low head sites.
If anyone else has been studying this effect we would be pleased to share notes, we believe it will help the industry as a whole.
Discussion on technical issues surrounding low head (typically less than 10m water pressure) hydro schemes.
