Exports
The global installed hydropower capacity is estimated at 760 GW, almost one quarter of the technical & economically feasible resource currently estimated at 3056 GW*.
Estimates suggest that if the remaining feasible projects were developed over the next 100 years and the UK hydro industry only won 1% of the business, then the value would be £400 million per year.
In the past, while the Renewable Obligation has stimulated growth in the domestic market for hydro-equipment and services, the export business had been in decline. However, the recent international recognition that hydropower is renewable and sustainable has increased the interest in and development of new hydropower worldwide.
Hydropower has the largest renewable energy technology export potential, with a wide range of UK companies offering extensive capability and experience. These cover developers, financiers/investors, hydrology and fishery expertise, consulting engineers in all disciplines, design engineering companies in all disciplines, manufacturers both at primary and secondary levels, equipment package suppliers, contractors, lawyers, project management and operation.
The British hydropower industry has an established export record and there is a bright future for the UK hydropower sector - starting from a strong and well-developed base and carrying our expertise to projects of all types and sizes throughout the world.
The Exports Credit Guarantee Dept (ECGD) may be able to assist hydropower companies looking to export capital good and/or services overseas, or wishing to invest abroad. View PDF for more information.
